Pet Allergies? We’re Here For You!

— By Dr. Antoinette Jones, D.V.M. —

A new season has arrived, and your dog is back to chewing its paws incessantly. This often continues late into the night, disrupting sleep, or your dog might be scratching all over, unable to fully reach that persistent itch. In some cases, you might notice your pet developing ear infections, skin issues, or an unpleasant odor. If this pattern repeats around the same time each year, your dog may be showing signs of skin allergies or allergic dermatitis. This is common in all dogs and can develop later in life or after moving to a new area.

How can I help my pet’s allergies?

What can you do to help? You can help relieve their itch with Cytopoint® or Apoquel®, two treatment options formulated to help control pet pruritus (itching) associated with allergic dermatitis and atopic dermatitis. One Cytopoint® injection starts treating the allergic itch within one day and can provide relief that lasts up to 4-8 weeks. On the other hand, Apoquel® is an oral medication that comes in a tablet or chewable tablet form. It begins relieving their itch within 4 hours and can control it within 24 hours.

Which allergy treatment should I choose?

We can help with that decision. After a thorough examination and treatment of any secondary issues, such as ear infections, skin infections, or anal gland problems, we’ll determine the best course of action for you and your pet.
